Purgatorio canto 12 finds the pilgrims still moving
through a region of purgatory devoted to excessive pride.
Dante is directed to look at his feet so he can see
historical images of pride embedded in the ground.
A luminous angel appears urging the pilgrims upwards.
The first letter "P" is erased from Dante's forehead.
